We are proud to be one of the few parishes in the diocese to offer Religious Education from Kindergarten through 12th grade; many programs end with the completion of the Junior High years. We also attempt to work with students who have special needs by providing instruction in one-on-one or small group sessions.
Ours is a large program with approximately 500 public school students and 75 volunteer catechists (teachers). Students also have the option of attending our Summer Intensive Program (two weeks in August) or being taught at home.
Our wonderful volunteer catechists come from all walks of life and range in age from college students to senior citizens. We provide lots of catechist training. Catechists new to our program attend a New Teacher Orientation before they begin teaching, and all catechists meet here at St. John's for a workshop once a month.
Each class meets thirty times from September through May for one hour once a week. Students register for the same grade they attend in school (i.e. a 2nd grade public school student will attend a 2nd grade Religious Ed class) Each student has his/her own Religious Ed book to work from in class and at home. Our goal is to keep our class sizes manageable, approximately 12 (or fewer) students per teacher, so each child gets the attention he/she needs.
St John of Rochester is currently considering a Sunday morning session to replace some of the underutilized sessions on Tuesdays.
