Home Teaching
With busy schedules and scarce family time, parents may choose to home teach their children. This option includes a parent and child meeting with Faith Formation coordinator to receive book and further instructions and concludes with a final meeting, (interview with parent and child and coordinator with final (exit) interview). Information is put into our parish records.
Sacraments of First Penance/First Communion/Confirmation
- General information
Sacraments are celebrated when the child is "ready" rather than any specific age group or grade. Required parent sessions explain "how" "why" and "when" take place before a parent brings a child for immediate preparation. Children must be catechized (Catholic School, Regular Faith Formation program or Home Taught) before beginning the process for immediate preparation of celebrating sacrament.
- First Penance
- Celebrated in late January as a group; individual celebrations (on any Saturday before regular confessions are heard) are also an option. Arrangements made through Faith Formation coordinator.
- Parents work at home with child using a special book. Parents also attend two workshops with their child. Parents also attend two meetings with Father Peter.
- Most children celebrate this sacrament of First Penance at SJR in 2nd Grade.
- First Communion
- Celebrated in early May as a group (Saturday, May 8, 2009 at 10:30 AM); small group celebrations (up to 15 children) on Saturday, May 8 at 5:00 PM Mass or Sunday, May 16 at 9:00 AM Mass and 10:30 AM Mass and Noon Mass or individual celebrations at any weekend Mass is also an option that is encouraged.
- Parents work at home with child using a special book. Parents must also attend two workshops with child. Parents also attend two meetings with Father Peter.
- Most children at SJR celebrate this sacrament of First Communion in 2nd Grade.
- Confirmation
- Celebrated in late November or early December at Sacred Heart Cathedral.
- Candidates, parents and sponsors attend two required workshops. Candidates receive material, in a folder, to work on at home to prepare.
- Most candidates are in the junior high age group although Confirmation at SJR has been celebrated by students as young as 3rd grade through 12th grade.
Vacation Bible School
Takes place during July. Classes meet from 9:00 AM to Noon each day beginning with morning prayer in church and ending with prayer in the classroom before dismissal. Children learn more about their Catholic faith, enjoy outdoor activities, snacks, daily mail, Christ-filled songs, etc. All students receive a camp T-shirt to wear all week in their class color. A closing celebration and family picnic conclude the week.
