Discovering Christ ----

A seven-week experience that invites you to hear the Good News and personally encounter Jesus Christ.

Discovering Christ consists of seven weekly sessions and a retreat day. The weekly sessions include four components: a meal, prayer time, a video teaching, and small group discussion.

  • The meal is a time to welcome guests foster relationships, and grow in friendship with one another.

  • The prayer time consists of singing together a couple of songs that offer the time to the Lord and help everyone become comfortable praying together.

  • The video sessions proclaim, the core Gospel message and invite participants to make a personal response to Jesus Christ.

  • The small groups are a place for people to freely share what they think and feel about the topic discussed in the teaching.

    Rev. James Boyle, Pastor Emeritus

Master of Divinity, St. Bernard's Seminary
Master in Counseling, University of Rochester - 1971
Associate Pastor, Our Lady of Good Counsel
Co-Pastor, St. John the Evangelist, Rochester
    Pastor, St. Mary's, Southside Elmira - 1981 - 1992
    Pastor, St. John of Rochester - 1992 - 2007
Retired and serves as weekend Sacramental Minister at SJR

I graduated from Holy Rosary Grammar School in 1953, from St. Andrew Seminary in 1960, and was ordained with 15 of my classmates at Sacred Heart Cathedral in June, 1966.

The wonderful priests, bishops and lay people with whom I have served taught me that an ideal pastor tries to serve a community that is close enough to see the pain in one another's eyes, and large enough to do something to relieve this pain.

Our parish vision to love as Christ first loved us is my fondest hope. On the bottom of my chalice around my mother's wedding band are the words, "As I continue your work, Lord, remember my parents, Sarah and Edward, whose love signed by this ring first taught me to love you."

I was born, raised and educated in Boston, MA. (a true "Proper Bostonian"!)
From 1973-79, I taught in suburban elementary Chicago public schools, while pursuing a Master of Education Degree.
From 1979-86, I taught in Manchester, NH and NYC (Manhattan) Catholic schools.
From 1986-88, I redirected my teaching vocation towards Church Ministry and joined the non-profit consulting team of the "Paulist Leadership and Renewal Project" helping to develop more effective parish leadership styles in Boston parishes.
From 1989-1990 I desired a more contemplative lifestyle and joined a Franciscan monastery in Arkansas ("Little Portion"), and daily worked at their Retreat Center.
From 1991-1997, I worked as Director of Religious Education in a large suburban Davenport, IA parish, while pursuing a Master of Pastoral Studies Degree.
From 1997-2000, I relocated to the Diocese of Rochester which offered greater pastoral opportunities. I served as Pastoral Associate at St. Vincent's, Corning, NY .
In July 2000, I joined the Staff of SJR, where I continue to enjoy ministering to the people of this wonderful parish!
