St. John of Rochester believes ...

your child's faith grows because of family.

Parents teach their children how to walk, talk, think, and behave - it's just what happens in parenting! Most often these lessons are "caught" more than they are "taught" of course - because children learn from their parents simply by being around them.

The same is true of living the faith. When parents attend Mass, that is the lesson their children will learn about the importance of Mass. When parents pray before meals, that is the life of prayer the children will learn.  When parents spend time in Scripture and say a daily rosary, that is what the faith will look like to their children.

The faith that children affirm will be the one their parents, not the parish, teaches them. Family Faith Formation is a new model based on an old idea; parents as primary catechists to their children. When this occurs, children are taught the faith as a way of life and not just as a weekly class.

In this model, the parish’s role is modified to increase focus on providing parents tools, activities, and support to help them succeed at being the faith educator that they already are, and together we will increase your child's understanding of how their faith provides guidance in their daily lives and their families daily life.

SJR has embraced the Family Faith Formation philosophy.  We think it will accommodate a wider range of our families, your child's learning style, their interests, and capabilities, and we know it results in a greater understanding of your child's faith within your family. To further support each families' busy schedule, we have designed our Family Faith Formation programs to be completed as a  "summer intensive" program or as a "school-year" program.

Which program works best for your family?

Summer Intensive Family Faith Formation:

July 5, 2021 through August 29, 2021.

How this works:

  • Parents will pick up the religious ed materials in June. (see samples below)

  • Two (2) lessons /week should be completed.

  • Parents will have two (2) lessons /month which will be emailed and available on this webpage during July - August.  These lessons are informational to help with clarity of lesson objectives for your child(ren).

  • Families will be required to attend a monthly gathering in the months of September thru March and May.  (We plan to offer each month's gathering multiple times & dates to  accommodate family schedules.) These gatherings are designed to reinforce the home-based learning.

  • We highly encourage our families to attend weekly Mass, listen to the Gospel and Homily and then to discuss as a family the meaning of the Gospel/Homily to help your child  grow deeper in faith and their relationship with God as they celebrate faith as a  community

** 6th &  7th graders can attend Youth Ministry as an alternative to Family Formation

Program Fee (For Books & Materials)
